| People who are addicted to video lottery gambling say they are not getting the help they need in a timely manner. In many cases, they're waiting six months before they see a counsellor to get help. Sean Brown, a reformed VLT gambler in central Newfoundland, has set up a self-help group for compulsive gamblers. He said VLT addicts face lengthy waits across the province, which in turn are adding to stress on the individuals and their families. "It's devastating, because … their wives and their families are saying go out and get help," he said. "And they're coming back quite frustrated with the word … that they can't get help right now." Addictions counsellors working through the public health system are aware of the situation. Counsellors are reporting an increasing caseload of gambling addicts, which means long waits before spots become open for treatment. Renee Ryan, an addiction services manager in St. John's, says the situation is common to all people who are suffering from an addiction. "On the Northeast Avalon, at least, there's no doubt that it's taking a little bit longer for people to get seen than what we would like," Ryan said. "We would like to see it different from what it is right now." Ryan says the best Addiction Services can do is chip away at caseloads. Anti-gambling advocates such as Brown say more money should be spent on helping problem gamblers. A study released in November on the prevalence of gambling in Newfoundland and Labrador emphasized that video lottery terminals pose a greater risk than most other types of gambling. The study found that 9.7 per cent of VLT players were described as being at moderate risk of addition, while another 8.6 per cent were described by the more serious designation of problem gamblers. And worst of all the government is thinking of introducing a new Keno VLT game in this province. WTF? Don't we have enough of those things in the province already? The way I see it, we should be trying to cut back on the number of those machines, not introduce new ones. But then again, I guess they don't care as long as their pockets are filled. Of course an outright ban is not going to work... that will just make things worse. What we really need is more help for these people. Because you can't deny it, there really is not enough help for people out there. People need to get clean and stay away. But it is really hard for them to do it on their own. That's why there needs to be more programs for them, not more temptation.
